The Holbrooke Hotel is a Historic National Landmark built in 1852 in Grass Valley, California. We were honored to be part of such a deep restoration of such a significant building. The hotel was divided into two buildings with an additional courtyard patio attached to the main structure. This project was a collaboration between Doug Washington Design, Ellipsis Designs & Bri Ingram. Our team primarily focused on the interior lobby, the restaurant and the lighting design. The client had a vision to maintain the original integrity of the building - to unearth rather than over-design.

The hotel bar is the oldest continuously operating bar this side of the Mississippi. The back bar was saved and restored and a painstaking restoration of the original copper walls was performed. The massive archway leading into the adjacent dining room was opened up making for a more unified floor plan. The dining room celebrates the original fireplace from 1852 complemented by walls covered with restored art and taxidermy. The focal point of the lobby is the original fully restored glass elevator replete with the original detailed ironwork encasing the cab. In addition to this, the lobby has a large custom designed, tufted velvet, circular banquette, leather couches and deer skin chairs, black marble tables and area rugs.
